Acupuncture Benefits for Aging Adults

Here’s a great list of acupuncture benefits for aging adults outlined by A Place for Mom.

1. Eye Issues

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that aging adults typically experience eye issues including acute conjunctivitis, cataracts and central retinitis myopia. Acupuncture can help with this as it addresses macular degeneration, dry eyes, diminished night vision and eye pain.

2. Mouth Issues

As we age, our mouth is one part of the body that as issues; everything from your jaw to teeth can be affected. The WHO made note of these common mouth problems that acupuncture treats:

  • Acute and Chronic Pharyngitis

  • Gingivitis

  • Post Extraction Pain

  • Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ)

  • Toothaches

3. Arthritis

Arthritis in aging adults is something I deal with frequently and find that this form of treatment offers wonderful relief to the pain suffered. As A Place for Mom describes:

Rheumatoid arthritis is commonly treated through acupuncture. The idea is that acupuncture points to treat arthritis are located all over the body, not just directly over the affected area, so during the acupuncture treatment, tiny needles could be placed along your loved one’s legs, arms, shoulders or wherever the practitioner determines is best to treat the condition.

4. Emotional Issues

Many aging adults experience anxiety, depression, insomnia and many other emotional and mental problems as a result of ageing and physical pains.

A Place for Mom notes:

Traditional Chinese medicine recognizes the body and mind interacting as one, meaning that emotions have a physiological effect on the body. By channeling the ‘Qi’ energy, acupuncture is able to help aging adults relax and live in a more balanced emotional reality.
